报告简介:

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth characterized by the number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. Each species has an inherent diversity of genes. At a higher level is the diversity of different habitats and ecosystems each with its own unique character.  Declining biodiversity in some areas is a concern as it is the foundation of ecosystem health. Threats to this foundation can lead to disruptive consequences, such as floods, pest and disease outbreaks. Genetic biodiversity has great value to mankind as the genes in crop plants can be exploited and turned into foods, fibers and medicine. Pesticides are potential threats to biodiversity as they tend to reduce plant and animal species indiscriminately causing breaks in food chains and favor pests. For instances pesticides that kill bees have disrupted pollination resulting in reduced fruit sets. Applications of biodiversity may include ecological engineering methods, using trap crops, intercrops, and integrating with livestock. To maximize biodiversity there is need to adopt more sustainable ecological management methods that maximize biodiversity, reduce pesticide use and improve pesticide marketing regulations that are threats and to develop products, tools, systems and strategies.
